The beginning of September is always a wonderful time to visit the Poseidonion Grand Hotel, when the Armata Spetses takes place. This year, from Saturday 2 to Sunday 10 September, visitors will be able to enjoy all the events of this important festival, which celebrates the historic role that the islanders played during the Greek War of Independence in 1822. From the beginning of the week a plethora of activities provide wonderful entertainment for all, from sailing races to musical recitals, traditional dancing and children’s theatre shows.

Prominently situated in the main town square, the Poseidonion Grand Hotel continues to play a central role in the gatherings and festivities and guests can benefit from having ease of access to all of the Armata celebrations. Each day that passes leads up to the grand finale on Saturday evening when a boat, which has been especially built by craftsmen of Spetses to symbolise a turkish vessel, is launched. As the crowds gather and the excitement builds up, the effigy is torched in the harbour in a re-enactment of the events that took place in 1822.

A stunning fireworks display lights up the night sky to the delight of onlookers and a sense of triumph and pride fills the air. Sunday sees the local church leaders carrying out blessings on the island as children cast pretty floral wreaths out to sea. A truly marvellous occasion on which to experience the unique hospitality of the Poseidonion Grand Hotel and the celebrations of Spetsian history and tradition.
